4:03 pm - Snupin: BLU story
I contributed a story to the snupin big bang. :)

Now that the site has gone active, I can link to my story:

Title: Truth of the Heart
Rating: R
Era: Post-War. The story begins immediately after the final decisive battle at Hogwarts.
Warnings: Violence
Summary: The war is finally over and, to his surprise, Remus Lupin has survived, though questions about just what happened to him during the final battle haunt his dreams and his waking hours in equal measure. When he realizes that Severus Snape is also still alive, Remus knows he can’t rest until he finds him. Something deep within him whispers that Severus holds the answers he needs and only when he’s face to face with him again will he be able to understand the true reason for his survival and find what’s been missing from his life for far too long.

(Truth of the Heart)

Other than a short story cobbled together from 30 minute fics and a parody of Snow White, I've not written any slash and, really, Truth of the Heart is my first serious attempt to write this pairing. I was a little surprised (but pleased!) that it was accepted for inclusion in BLU.

Back in the dark ages, when I began to write HP fanfiction, I wrote two gen/adventure stories that featured Snape and Lupin called Bound by the Moon and Shadow of the Moon where I forced them to work together against their better judgment and sent them off on a quest for a cure for lycanthropy...which they sort of found. When I look back at those stories now, my fingers itch to edit them severely, but I really enjoyed writing them at the time.

When I was looking around for a new fandom challenge/direction, I decided to give writing Snupin a try because Snape and Lupin have always been two of my favorite HP characters, and I really enjoy playing them off each other. Anyway, for better or worse, this story is what I came up with.

I did one illustration for Truth of the Heart, which was allowed because I'd already done it before I submitted the story, and three illustrations for two other stories included in the archive. I've never had many opportunities to illustrate other people's work and found it to be tremendous fun!

The artwork that was done for my story...by karasu hime, omni sama, and venturous is absolutely gorgeous! Even if you have no interest in reading the story...go look for the art. And while you're there, check out what's been done for the other stories. There's lots of art to be seen, and it's fabulous! :D

7:55 am - Sky Shots
I finally got around to unloading the latest batch of digital pictures onto my computer. Some of them came out pretty well so I thought I'd post a few of the more colorful cloud and sunset shots. Finally got my new computer up and running, too. It's so nice to have a screen that doesn't distort images! :)

7:40 pm - Optical Migraines
I had an optical migraine the other day. I haven’t had one in years. They’re odd things. No pain, but they can really bring your life to a dead stop for awhile depending how complete they are and what you’re doing at the time.

The first time I had one it scared the hell out of me. I was at home, and I’d just fed my little one when all of a sudden I realized that there was this shiny, pulsing spot in the lower right corner of my visual field and it was growing. Before long it was covering half my vision with bright jagged lines in a zig-zag pattern. I couldn’t see through it and it was getting bigger quite rapidly.

I found that the only thing that seemed to help was lying down in a dark room and trying very hard to relax. As soon as I did that, the thing receded. It really only lasted a bit more than a half hour, but it was startling and rather scary. It happened once more a few months later and then not again for years. The third time, I was driving the car when it began. Fortunately, I was able to find a place to stop safely before my vision was too obstructed. Again, once I closed my eyes and calmed my breathing, it reversed itself and slid back out of my field of vision.

This latest one was a bit different. Instead of beginning in the lower corner of my right side, it began as a small crescent right in the middle of my visual field. Gradually it expanded like the ripple you’d get if you dropped a pebble into the water until it swept completely off the left side of my vision. By the time it disappeared it had expanded greatly, but it remained a crescent and never filled in the center so I was able to see through it during the whole process. The flashes were more circular this time, too, instead of the black jagged lines of the past. This one lasted about 20 minutes.

I knew my husband got them, but I learned when I got this latest one that my Mom gets them occasionally, too. Then today my daughter said she got one a few years ago. I’m guessing they run in the family, though no one ever really brought them up before. Does anyone else get them? If so, how do they look to you? My daughter said that her flashes were in colors, but mine were always bright and dark, sort of a silver and black effect.

1:48 pm - SS/MM Fic and Art
Title: For the Sake of Argument
Rating: PG
Pairing: McGonagall/Snape
Word Count: 7020
Warnings: None

Summary: In the months since the Battle of Hogwarts, Minerva McGonagall has tried to go on with her life despite losing so many people she cared for. Before beginning a new school term, she decides to take her usual holiday by the sea to gather her strength, but someone else has different plans for her and things do not go as she expects.

Author's/Artist's Notes: This fic was written for the [info]hp_beholder fest on IJ as a gift for [info]atdelphi. Many thanks to [info]erised1810, [info]deepforestowl, and [info]ann_mcn for giving me their time and thoughts on the story and its artwork! I appreciate your help more than I can say. :)

4:34 pm - Irises and Clouds
Well, Mother Nature must have heard the irritation in my voice because she cleared off some of the clouds and gave me a nice sunset yesterday. Then today was a much nicer day. Warm, still some clouds around, but no rain. Yay! So I decided to celebrate by pulling weeds out of the garden...give those suckers a week or two of rain and they think they own the place. I also took a few more pictures and, since I found my missing program (Yay! again), I could crop and shrink them enough to post. Most are behind the cut, but I wanted a touch of color on my journal so I left one out to brighten things up. :)

6:47 pm - Rain, Rain...Enough All Ready!
It's been raining here for what seems like forever. I'm sure that perception isn't accurate, but it still feels right. Everything is soggy, and I'm tired of my steps squeaking and my hair frizzing all the time. I want to see the sun again. Not just a coy glimpse from between towering clouds such as we had late yesterday and today. I don't want Mother Nature to toy with me anymore...I want to see blue sky again. Lots of it.

Everyone says the rain is good for the plants which is definitely true for some of them. All the lawns around here look like green velvet, there's no denying it. Even the ones with a higher concentration of weeds than grass, such as my own, are looking lush and beautiful. But the rain isn't good for all the plants. It's making a real mess of my beautiful irises.

I think of irises as butterflies of the plant family. They come in lots of dazzling colors, and the blooms are very delicate and fragile. They generally only last for about a week, with each plant putting out two or three blooms in rapid succession. Unfortunately, they really don't stand up to rain very well at all.

Rain, particularly the heavy, pounding stuff that we've been having more than our share of lately, tends to beat the delicate blossoms down into rather sticky, bedraggled looking balls that remind me of the curled up toes of the Wicked Witch of the East after Glinda so rudely removed her slippers.

I'm pinning my hopes on tomorrow when they are "pretty sure that we stand a really good chance of it being a bit drier, though a pop-up storm here or there is still possible". The rain will definitely return on Friday, however. I hope the irises dry out fast.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but...is anyone around here a fan of Firefly/Serenity? I watched the series and the movie over the weekend and would be curious to hear people's opinions of it. :)

11:28 am - Clouds
Photobucket

We had an interesting hour or so yesterday afternoon with lots of sirens, hail, rain, wind, and the threat of tornadoes, though fortunately Mother Nature didn't make good on that threat here. We seemed to be in a rather narrow corridor with the tougher stuff going by on either side of us. Not sure how we got that lucky, but I'm not complaining. The clouds were pretty interesting to watch though. I took a few pictures. Nothing incredibly exciting, but I enjoyed the show...so I thought I'd post a few for anyone who might find them interesting. :)

4:03 pm - bare/ bear with me?
I was reading some excerpts from an advance reader copy of a young adult novel at work today, and I came across a lion “bearing” its teeth. I don’t know how much more editing ARCs go through before the final version hits print, but I hope it’s at least one more go through. I don’t know about the lion, but I’d be happier if it was able to bare its teeth properly.

I wonder if errors like that are more common than they used to be? Or perhaps I’m just more aware of them now. My son recently received a postcard from one of the colleges he’s been accepted to telling him that it wasn’t “to” late to send in his tuition deposit. That one depressed me a bit. You’d think that colleges would be more careful with their mailings.

10:29 am - What season is it really?
Two days ago it was sunny and almost 80 here. Everyone was smiling and exclaiming, with relief in their voices, "Spring is here! Can summer be far away?" Hah! Today it's sleeting outside. March has always been a fickle month, but really...
